Overview

Macintosh computers come with QuickTime, which can be used to make video recordings of your screen. If you have a newer (post-2018) operating system, there’s a keyboard shortcut to launch screen recording, but on all Macs you can record by launching the QuickTime app.

Settings

You may need to alter your privacy settings to give Quicktime permission to record.

  1. Launch System Preferences.
  2. Click the Security and Privacy icon (it looks like a house).
  3. Select the Privacy tab.
  4. If the Lock icon at the bottom of the pane is closed, click it to allow changes to your Settings you may need to enter your Administrator password at that time.
  5. Roll down the list and select Screen Recording, and check to see whether the Quicktime icon appears in the right.
  6. If Quicktime is there, you’re all set. If not, use the + button to add it.

Recording

Shift + Command + 5

Within OS Mojave (which came out in 2018) and newer systems, you can type Shift + Command + 5 to launch video recording.

Please note that the Command key is sometimes called the Apple key.

  1. Launch your game.
  2. Type Shift + Command + 5 (all at once) on your keyboard.
  3. Either click the icon corresponding to recording your whole screen or select a specified portion of your screen by drawing a box around what you’d like to capture.
  4. If needed, you can set options such as where files are stored, the countdown to recording, and sound options.
  5. Click Record to start the countdown to recording.
